Title: Ross council vote count set for Wednesday
Date: June 5, 2012
Author: Paul Liberatore, Marin Independent Journal
There's been nothing routine about this year's Ross Town Council election, including when voters will know who won.
Because the race involves five write-in candidates vying for three seats, the votes from the polls must be counted by hand, beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the day after Tuesday's election. Elaine Ginnold, Marin's registrar of voters, said preliminary results should be available by early afternoon.
Ross found itself in an embarrassing situation in March when no one filed to run for the council for the first time in town history. Five residents later qualified as write-in candidates.
They are: Elizabeth Brekhus, a 42-year-old attorney with three children, two attending Ross School; Barbara Call, 67, a former teacher who now works as a financial adviser and has been active in local environmental issues; Kathleen "Katie" Hoertkorn, 61, the first woman vice president of DHL, currently a business consultant; P. Beach Kuhl, 76, a lawyer currently serving on the Marin County Civil Grand Jury; and Jed Nelson, a 30-year-old Ross native who works as an internal auditor for a real estate investment trust.
