With county election officials still considering their final action, the Los Angeles City Council went on record Tuesday urging that some 50,000 contested ballots cast by independent voters on Feb. 5 be counted.

“There is a great deal of concern that we make sure each vote is counted,'' Council President Eric Garcetti said, pointing to concerns raised by a number of groups, including the NAACP, Southwest Voters Registration Project and the Courage Campaign.

County regulations that required decline to state,'' American Independent and Green Party members to fill in a special bubble in order to vote in the Democratic primary election have come under attack.

If those bubbles were not filled in, the vote for president was not counted.

Officials with the county Registrar-Recorder's Office said no decision has been made on what to do with the ballots.
