HEADLINE: EARLY PRIMARY COULD CAUSE SOME REAL PROBLEMS
BODY:
The Legislature is pushing ahead with a plan for California to have its presidential primary in February rather than June, 2008. The intent is to give California more clout in the selection of the party nominees. The Senate Elections Committee approved Senate Bill 113 on Wednesday, and it could go to the full Senate as soon as today. The legislators need to listen to the warnings from county clerks, who are asking for some flexibility in adding a third statewide election to the calendar. The clerks suggest the Feb. 5 ballot could be all-mail in some counties or that precincts might be combined to reduce the demand for poll workers. Either way, the point is not just to have an election that is early but one that meets all of the high standards for accessibility and accuracy.
