El Dorado County elections officials said they were pleased with the performance of their new voting system in Tuesday's primary election.
"I certainly believe it was a success," said Norma Gray, assistant registrar of voters. She said results for all precincts were in by about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. From a technical standpoint, "it was smooth as silk," said Joe Zitzelberger, system coordinator.
Tuesday's election was characterized by lower-than- expected voter turnout. With about 35 percent of registered voters casting ballots, however, El Dorado County topped the statewide turnout of 28 percent. The new format for the vote summary provided on the Election Department's Web page caused some confusion for those monitoring election results online. Unlike the former system, the summaries did not automatically update but required computer users to manually "refresh" or "reload" for the most recent vote count.
